We will stand up for our friends in the world. And one of the most important friends is the State of Israel. My administration will be steadfast in support Israel against terrorism and violence, and in seeking the peace for which all Israelis pray.

  Learn about Israel

Israel, the only true democracy in the middle east, while a young nation of less than 60 years, has quickly grown to be a world player in the fields of technology, culture, industry, politics and regard for human rights.

Approximately 7 million people populate this small country about the size of New Jersey. While known as the Jewish State, Israel respects all religions, and there are large populations of Christians and Muslims as well as Jews and other religions from around the globe.

Israel features coasts of several bodies of water, mountains and deep valleys, farmland and desert, urban cities and rural areas. The climate ranges from temperate to tropical.

Israel is a vibrant democracy featuring vigorous dissent from minority parties and from a strong free media. Israel features media who argue from the left to the right and in between, and also has a vibrant arab press. All people are given the right to free speech and freedom of the press, contributing to the open discourse.

While Jews lived continuously in the area we call today Israel since biblical times, the modern state of Israel was founded by Declaration on May 14, 1948, after the Jewish State won approval in the United Nations. Israel was quickly recognized by the United States and a few days later, the USSR. Today, Israel maintains strong relationships politically and

economically with many nations around the globe, and always seek peace within the country and among its surrounding arab neighbors.

The Israeli Flag

The flag of the state of Israel in its modern form is older than the state itself, and it incorporates ancient themes of the religous and cultural life of the Jewish People.

According to David Wolffsohn, the colors of the flag were chosen based on the blue and white stripes on the white Tallis, the Jewish prayer shawl. The symbol in the middle, called the Magen David or Star of David, is said to have been designed based on the shield of David, a King of Israel who also wrote the Book of Psalms. The shape was also used by Nazis to identify Jews. The Star of David is also used by Magen David Adom, the Israeli version of the Red Cross.

Population of Israel

Israel's Current Population Information.

Israel's Population Projection.

The 6.5 million people in Israel are not all native Israeli and not all Jewish. Israel is a democracy made up of peoples from around the world. While at heart, Israel is a Jewish State, its citizens believe strongly in religous freedom for all, including the safeguarding and open admission to Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Druze, Bahai and other holy sites located throughout the country, and freedom to worship in any synagogue, church, mosque, or other house of worship that a person chooses. Freedom of Religion for all inside Israel is guaranteed by the 1948 Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. Israel is home to 1.5 million people who are not Jewish, and yet most proudly call the Jewish State home, involving themselves in the culture and economy and even fighting in the army.
